Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus, fall within the scope of gastroenterology. A gastroenterologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
  3. Hepatology: Hepatology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the liver. It is a medical subspecialty within gastroenterology.
  4. Endocrinology: Endocrinology is the study of the glands that secrete hormones. The glands that secrete hormones include the thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary and adrenal cortex (outer layer).
  5. Diabetology: Diabetology is a branch of medicine that deals with diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which a person has high blood glucose levels over a prolonged period. Hyperglycaemia results from a defect in insulin production and resistance to insulin, which normally allows glucose to pass from the blood into the cells for energy.
  6. Neurology: Neurology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
  7. Pneumology: Pneumology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the respiratory system. The respiratory system is the route by which air enters and leaves the lungs. It consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx (voice box), trachea and bronchi (airways).
  8. Oncology: (treatment of cancer). Oncology is the study of cancer and a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. Oncology is often practised by oncologists, doctors who specialise in the treatment of tumours, cancer and its side effects.
  9. Nephrology: Nephrology is a medical speciality that focuses on the kidneys and the treatment of kidney disease. A nephrologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease and disorders, as well as educating patients about their condition. Nephrology may also be called renal medicine or renal medicine and dialysis.
  • Dialysis: Dialysis is a treatment that uses a machine to remove excess fluid and waste products from your blood when your kidneys cannot. Dialysis is used to keep your body healthy when you have kidney failure.
  • Haematology: Haematology is a medical speciality that focuses on the study, diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. A haematologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs.
  • Paediatrics: Paediatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children and adolescents, generally from birth to 18 years of age. A doctor who specialises in paediatrics is called a paediatrician.
  • Gynaecology: Gynaecology is the branch of medicine that deals with the health of women and their reproductive organs. It covers a wide range of women’s health issues, from reproduction to the menopause.
  • Obstetrics: Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that deals with pregnancy and childbirth. It also refers to the whole speciality devoted to this area, which includes the pregnant woman, her foetus and the puerperium (the period immediately following childbirth).
